THESE THINGS CAN BE…

Short / quickly finished actions

- I ate a sandwich last night.

- She said hello when she saw me.

Longer situations

- I watched TV all day on Sunday.

- I lived in Barcelona for seven years.

Repeated events

- I tried to call you every day last week.

- Every seven minutes, another tram came by the station.

Past Simple is used to tell stories

- One day the handsome young prince decided to see the world.

He packed his things, kissed his mother the Queen goodbye, and walked down the road, which was wide and flat…

THE FORMS OF PAST SIMPLE ARE

REGULAR

Many verbs can be put into the Past Simple by adding "-ed”

This afternoon I played basketball.

– Yesterday it snowed for three hours.

– I loved that film!  It reminded me of one I watched last year.

IRREGULAR

Some verbs do NOT end with "-ed” in the Past Simple.

The most important of these is TO BE

– I / HE / SHE / IT WAS or WASN'T

– WE / YOU / THEY WERE or WEREN'T

Some other common verbs that are also irregular are:

NEGATIVES AND QUESTIONS

USE DID + INFINITIVE to make Questions and Negatives

I started  /  I didn't start  /  Did I start?

He answered  /  He didn't answer  /  Did he answer?

They watched  /  They didn't watch  /  Did they watch?

BE CAREFUL!!!

I started but I didn't start

We went but We didn't go

He had but He didn't have

She did it but Did she do it?

It rained but Did it rain?

You ate but Did you eat?
